Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter Launches Shoe Drive Fundraiser
to Raise Money for Shelter Pets
Frederick, MD – Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter (FFOCAS) is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser from April 2nd through May 31st, 2018, to raise much-needed funds for homeless animals residing at Frederick County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center, the county’s open-admission animal shelter. FFOCAS will earn funds from Funds2Orgs based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn used and new shoes collected. Those dollars will go directly to paying for medical care and enrichment for shelter animals. Animals we have assisted recently include Sugar, a young terrier who arrived at the shelter with a hip injury requiring surgery and extensive physical therapy, and Stella, a senior cat who needed a dental cleaning and extractions to keep her healthy and pain-free.
Anyone can help by simply dropping off their gently worn used and new shoes at the following locations: Paws in the City (112 East Patrick Street), JoJo’s Restaurant and Tap House (16-18 East Patrick Street), Barley and Hops (5473 Urbana Pike), and Pet Valu (1305 West 7th Street).
All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe, and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school.
“We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets,” said Bette Brown, president of FFOCAS. “By donating them to our organization, folks can help us raise money for the county’s homeless pets, who often come to the shelter with untreated medical conditions, behavioral issues, or sometimes both. With financial help from FFOCAS, the shelter can provide the treatment these animals need to become healthy, happy, adoptable pets. This fundraiser is a win-win for everyone: it helps shelter pets right here in Frederick and people in developing countries.”
FFOCAS is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting the lifesaving work of our county’s only animal shelter by providing the resources to treat and rehabilitate animals with medical and behavioral needs, enrich the shelter environment, and provide targeted volunteer support.
